It was wildly inadvisable to rest and recover in a place like Jades. For mortals, even though the tiny city was the last bastion of relative safety and security in the unspeakably deadly southeastern jungles, it was still in the middle of the unspeakably deadly southeastern jungles. For all Exalted apart from Dynasts, it was the equivalent of a military camp with a small village attached to it, which made it singularly daunting to even stop for directions and supplies. And for even the children of the Scarlet Empress...it was practically a penitentiary assignment. The turnover rate was likely immense.
Kirasath Dravere at once pitied and worried for them. There was no hatred in her eyes as she first saw the banner of the Realm hanging from one beleaguered wall. These were not creatures of her nightmares, or villains from some children's story. They were people, loyal soldiers who had given their all for their country. They stood at the precipice of death and madness that was the deep jungle, a hair's breadth from Ma-Ha-Suchi's clutches and within a few days' walk of one of the most dangerous old ruins ever. These were brave patriots wasting their lives on a fool's errand, and she felt nothing but respect and sorrow for them.
Shi-Oda had wisely decided to instead make his way through the jungles and find a place to lay low. It was prudent specifically for him, as the Dragon-Blooded in the garrison would have easily seen through his Tell, and the local Lunar warlord was, if Kira had understood correctly, unpleasant. This meant that she was alone in a dangerous city full of people who would no-doubt try to kill her if they knew what she was. This wasn't the first time she'd faced an identical trial. Once, years ago by now, she had sat and had tea with a group of Immaculate monks. This was, of course, long before Lies had seen fit to gift to her a sword and coat of armor the woman who she used to be had worn in Ages past...
Now, it might be more difficult to blend in.
Stepping off the boat bound from the northern river, Kira once again messed with her hair. This jungle humidity was doing it no favors, and it threatened her ever-calm mood a bit more each day. The village, rather than the garrison, was her first stop. Lodging for the night. A good meal. She hadn't eaten anything but river rations since...gods, Marukan. Had it been so long already?

Fate was a curious thing. Kajek at once felt its tug and call, yet was aware of just how quickly he could alter his own fate on a whim. Those chosen by the Unconquered Sun were without peer. And yet, despite how easily he could have set himself above the mortals and ruled, he did not. It was not in him to subject the masses for his own ego and power. He spread the word of the Unconquered Sun, righting the dogmatic views of the Immaculate Order and bringing His light to places where Creation needed it most.
As a result of a string of strange dreams and nagging feelings of half-forgotten memories, Kajek had abruptly turned his attention east. He had rarely ventured so far East as to see the ever-present sea of trees. In fact, he could count the number of times he saw a proper tree on one hand. Yet he was venturing further and further East on this strange feeling. The further away from his home he went, the more Kajek felt like he was getting to something wondrous... and dangerous.
The city he came across was strange to his Southern senses. By all accounts he had heard, cities in the Center and East of Creation were great assortments of towering structures and high walls. Yet this city, Jades, was so much plainer than he expected. Indeed he knew of some border towns in the South that had a better developed sense of infrastructure and defense than this city did. The most noteworthy thing he could find of it was that it had a garrison of Dragon Blooded and mortal Realm soldiers. He kept his hood up high for the time being as he was not sure how they would react to his Arbiter brand.
Of course having his hood down so low did nothing for his navigating. By now, he could feel something new in the air of the city; a faint pulsing, a strange mixture of peace and terror. He had not yet oriented himself to this sensation when he heard a voice call out in High Realm. "You, man in the cloak. Lower your hood." He paused in the streets, back to the man. It was a mortal, of that he was certain. However, he was not yet sure of how to go about handling the situation.
Rather than needlessly resort to violence, he lowered his hood slowly and waiting for the mortal soldier to work up the nerve to come closer. As he did, the spark of gold caught his attention. Before he could even shout, Kajek knew what was coming. "ANATHEMA!" The mortal shouted, panicking and brandishing his weapon defensively. Kajek sighed and stood there without moving as the people began to scatter. This was not how he imagined spending time in the East.
"Shut it, you daft sack o' sorry." A curious voice filled the air, impossibly airy and melodious. Kajek turned his head towards the source. At first he did not even see her, so light was her step. She had to step much closer than he was comfortable with before Kajek got a good sense of her. Clearly Dragon-Blooded, the woman practically danced across the street. With barely a care, she brushed aside the offending polearm and stopped barely an arm's length from him. "He is no Anathema. He is an Arbiter of the South, a man of justice. Tell me, Arbiter; what has you so far from the sands of your home?"
He contemplated lying, but found little reason to try. It was an innocent enough question after all. "I am not entirely sure myself, Child of Mela." Kajek gave the Dragon-Blooded woman a bow in deference, not wanting to attract any further attention than necessary. "I felt pulled here, perhaps by some higher power." He could only hope that she was suitable satisfied with his answer and would let him continue on without any further complications. The pulsing had gotten stronger.

"ANATHEMA!"
Kira blinked. If she'd any idea that she was currently wanted by the Guild for far more than any sane individual would be willing to pay, she might have bolted for shelter on the spot. Instead, her head calmly raised to see what the fuss was about...and she almost imperceptibly relaxed when she noted that it wasn't her. A man with a gold plate on his forehead would have been extremely easy to confuse for a Solar, that much was true, but judging by how one of the local officers reacted, it was probably some exotic southern tradition.
Using the commotion as a distraction to move to someplace less public so her own golden embroidery and sword wouldn't draw attention, Kira calmly made her way to the portion of Jades not explicitly devoted to maintaining a working military detachment. A couple of farms, a small town, and a tavern that seemed to be more interested in serving drink to a very beleaguered army than it did providing bed and board for visitors. Fortunately, she didn't need a bed to rest her head on. She needed supplies and a ship to Chaing-Dav, and getting them would have been much easier if she had someone who grew up in a jungle with her to pick them out. First, food for three.
Because Shi-Oda ate enough for two and a half.
Add to that the fact that Kira really didn't have much in the way of money and it was probable that they'd need to skip Chaing-Dav entirely and make it through the wilderness on their own. A doubly daunting prospect. Potentially deadly, actually. Food, protective gear, supplies, directions, and a path past the territory of Ma-Ha-Suchi would not be easy to come by. Sighing as she stood outside a building advertised as the local outfitter, she bode her time until her nerve caught back up with her to walk in and take stock of how much everything would run her. Expense didn't come cheap when you lived without a dinar to your name.

The Dragon-Blooded woman looked satisfied enough with his answer and let him go with his travels. While he turned away from the pair, Kajek was keenly aware of the irate glare from the second Terrestrial. He had not liked being called out like that by his superior, at least Kajek assumed she was his superior given their different dispositions and how readily the cowardly man fell in line. However, it was obvious that the sun-marked traveler was being held responsible for that miserable failing.
Kajek simply made a note of it and kept moving past the garrison and into the small city. There weren't nearly so many people as he could find in the likes of Paragon or Chiaroscuro, but Kajek honestly found it significantly more relaxing. Fewer people meant fewer footsteps. Too many people in an area gave him a rough headache. So to come across a city like this gave the Arbiter a sense of peace.
You could tell a lot about a person by the manner in which they walked. Those with the lightest steps were Air-Aspected Dragon-Blooded, or perhaps scouts or gymnasts. This far from 'proper' civilization, the former was the most likely. There were the uneven steps of drunkards, the drilled, precise steps of the soldiers, the soft pitter-patter of children - it all came together in a beautiful song that only he could hear.
However pleasant it was to be out of a metropolis, however, Kajek still had a reason for being out this far east. He was meant to come out this way to find someone. Perhaps they would help him in his quest to free Paragon from the corrupt Perfect. Perhaps it was to find some piece of lost knowledge and lore to help him better understand the nature of his Exalted self and what he was capable of.
In particular, one set of steps interested him. They were distinct from the others. Only a rare few ever walked with this particular gait, the self-assured stride of someone meant to rule. Each step was that of a queen, and yet... not. Kajek was not sure at all what to make of them, so he quietly followed some dozens of yards back. He stopped when necessary, appearing to browse stock and converse with natives. Whomever she was, perhaps it was she he was meant to meet. Whether that meeting was to be pleasant or hostile, he was not yet sure.

With a heavy sigh, Kira walked out of the outfitter's just as quickly as she'd entered. "Well, thank you for allowing me to browse your stock anyway, sir." Would that she had the capital to actually procure resources instead of just identifying them. She closed the door behind her and wrapped her cloak tighter around her body. It would have been a bad idea to linger in a merchant's shack anyway. The Guild had a presence anywhere money was exchanged, and judging by the "WANTED" poster on the wall with a crude rendition of her face on it, they had some grievance with her. She suspected Emerald's work, as usual.
That man from earlier was outside. At a glance, she could tell exactly why his appearance might draw screams of Anathema. A golden crest on the forehead was exactly what the average Immaculate believer looked for to spot unholy demons from Ages past. Kira felt no small amount of pity for him, as he had to deal with the same thing she did, only all the time, and without the aid of being an invincible battle goddess.
...Well, allegedly. Those were some very golden gloves he was wearing, and he did seem to carry himself with a regal bearing. Had she been a more forthright individual, Kira might have asked him directly, but with the upbringing she'd had she was lucky to even allow herself to look at him. Introducing herself to him without interest or provocation was simply out of the question.
She was in a Dragon-Blooded settlement and couldn't attend to the task that she came for. There was only one thing left to do, then. Kira walked slowly through the city of Jades, her incredibly sharpened senses trained on every little occurrence around her. If there were lives to improve, she would know, but more importantly, if she could learn anything about her likely future adversaries, now was the time to do so. A militaristic society led by Tya very mannish, possibly insane women was somewhat daunting for the Tya slightly mannish, possibly insane girl to confront.
Luckily, she had no need to do so right now. Anonymity was turning out to be a precious commodity, and she would scarcely waste it on something as frivolous as a backwater security station.
