Name: Hafren Coriah
Age: 24
Exaltation/Caste: Earth Aspect Dragon-Blooded
Affiliations: Haslanti Air Fleet, Spiral Academy Graduate, Realm Expat
Bio:
The Hafren House has always been small and relatively powerless. Although they had a couple notable ancestors of note in the Shogunate era, these days, the limited glory and respect earned by their deeds - as well as the family coffers- has mostly faded. They were blessed, then with a daughter who Exalted as a Dragon-Blooded of the Earth, and were delighted to see her grow into a clever, driven young woman. Coriah was accepted into the Spiral Academy and showed no small measure of promise in that fine institution. Although she was never the top of her class, and her methodology was doubtlessly effective, Coriah was neither concerned with making friends or establishing contacts. Such things are arguably a major part of the Spiral Academy, but academically she carried her own and her parents were too busy trying to find a good, profitable match for her to secure the future of House Hafren.
They did manage to find a partner for her, a militant son of a minor branch of House Ledaal- practically a lottery win for the struggling Hafren family. Coriah was wed shortly after her graduation to Ledaal Xao, and celebrated both by sailing to Cherak with her older brother and husband for a much-desired vacation. At some point during the trip, their ship was beset by a monster. As the known story goes, Coriah was the only survivor of the attack and went insane with grief, washed ashore in Cherak and went to the North to die among the Icewalkers - sealing generations of decline for her house in an instant of misery.
The truth is a bit more grizzly. A monster beset the ship and, standing between the crew and family and the beast, Coriah's brother revealed himself as Anathema and engaged the massive thing in deadly combat. The ship was all but destroyed in the process, the crew scattered and lost to the waves, and Coriah's brother on death's door. Her husband Xao stood above, ready to finish off the Anathama and earn all the accolades that came with it, but Coriah refused to believe her brother was forever lost to her as a demon. Coriah managed to convince her husband to stay his hand and spare her brother's life, although she and Xao realized that doing so would mean that they'd likely become outcasts in the Realm if word ever got out. Being young and prone to rash decisions, the three Exalts fled to Cherak to plan their next move.
Luckily, the Haslanti League - ever in conflict with the Icewalker tribes and the Linowan on either front - were eager to snap up a trained and talented young officer educated in arguably one of the best institutions in Creation. Coriah made land with her boys and spread the story that they'd died at sea, so as not to disgrace their names, and set upon the long journey North. They parted at the border of the Haslanti League, and - after being thoroughly interrogated for remaining loyalties or important intel - Coriah was accepted as a Junior Logistics Officer in the Haslanti Air Fleet, and her husband followed suit into the Haslnati military, following his own career path.
Coriah excelled in the role and quickly worked her way up, earning accolades and raises, before joining a field unit to 'stretch her legs' a bit after years of infrastructure and office work. With the Linowan apparently exploding in military power and the Bull in the North gathering his armies once more, the Haslanti Air Fleet is all hands on deck to keep their lands safe, and Coriah is all too pleased to have a reason to use her fancy, ancient cannon in live combat. She is, after all, a Dragon-Blooded first, and a bureaucrat second; war games and exercises can only quell the urge to do battle for so long.
Although it's rumored that Coriah has a heart, the men underneath her in the chain of command have yet to see it. So long as the military runs like the well-oiled machine of war it's supposed to be, it's rare to see Coriah taking an active role in things as opposed to casual inspections or paperwork. The moment something goes wrong, she explodes into motion, barking commands and levying ultimatums until things are set right. Her default state is disgustingly organized and efficient, and anything less than that from her subordinates is unacceptable. She maintains a small office under her direct command in the Haslanti League, staffed by five young mortal officers who meet - or almost meet - her standards of excellence. Although harried with commands and held to the letter of their training, it's generally well known that Coriah's Adjutants are some of the most well-trained and efficient logistical officers in the service of the Air Fleet. Although as trained for active duty as any other soldier, their primary duties and the bulk of their careers have been spent arranging supply lines, facilitating communication, and running other crucial bureaucratic errands. Coriah is known to loan her officers out to other deptartments when she is abroad or overstaffed.
Coriah and her team of adjutants are sometimes referred to as Paper Tigers. This typically is more an example of their bureaucratic duties than it is their ferocity. Although it was no doubt intended as an insult, Coriah takes a perverse amount of pride in the handle and isn't shy about using an inherently insulting term to refer to herself and her soldiers.
Appearance:
Coriah enjoys her relative affluence, and isn't at all shy about showing it off. Her clothes are fashionable and custom-made, her armor is impeccably made and constantly adjusted for her comfort, and she generally walks with the confidence and aloof nature of one born to a Great House rather than a fading one of almost no importance - not that her affiliation with the now-defunct House Hafren is important to her at all at this point. That said, she is a woman from the comparatively metropolitan Blessed Isle, and enjoys the air of exotic mystery and refinement that this upbringing gives her compared to the frozen wastelands of the Haslanti League. She's well-educated, has relevant experience, and knows that she looks damn good applying both to all she does while climbing the ladder of command.
A fairly typical Earth Aspect, Coriah has brown hair and tends to be relatively grounded in mannerism when she isn't losing her temper. She can come off as smug and condescending, and frequently is, but uses such a tone as a form of endearment more than genuine insult. She sees little point in being subtle when a direct action would be more expedient, and isn't burdened by modesty or a reluctance to be flashy. Much like her wealth and fashion sense, Coriah absolutely owns nearly every action she undertakes with absolute confidence.
Potential Plot Hooks:
-Coriah's older brother is a Celestial Exalted - Anathema. Although she wholly believes that he's the same brother she's always known and loved, their lives have gone in separate directions. She'd love to see him again, and I've left him relatively undefined as an invitation for a player to play him.
-Some people speculate that Coriah couldn't possibly be as wealthy as she is for the amount of time she's put in in the military. Coriah explains that she's really good at managing finances, usually before sabotaging the careers of people who make such blatant accusations. There are a lot of dark alleys she doesn't like to walk down as a result.
-Coriah's Paper Tigers are a team of highly-skilled and driven paper-pushers with a reputation for being highly effective and trained by one of the best (in the field of bureaucratic and logistical work) young officers in the Haslanti Air Fleet.
