AsThe small and unnoticed nation of Dura sat amidst the eastern plains like an unpolished jewel at the mouth of the eastern forest. It's walls were built on top of a first age ruin that was excavated by the local ruler, the dream sage, Darumak. The sage in his wisdom began the study of the artifacts found but something has halted his studies. in his dreams he has seen the dark hoards of a wicked figure rising from the forest to consume the jewel and he has called out for aid in any form her can find.
The Heros (You) have received a message from either the person that introduced them to their new existence or by word of mouth that a small kingdom has called out for help in the east. as they enter the city they will find a circular city with 10 foot walls painted the color of the savanna. The city has a central tower with all buildings getting progressively smaller as they move toward the walls. The streets are winding with many abrupt dead ends and alleys. Anyone with a background in tactics will notice it has been designed to allow for marksmen to fire down into the streets from a distance and the streets are to keep an invading force from marching straight through in any significant numbers. Near the walls are a plethora of open air shops and laborers homes which appear little better than shacks. It takes only a cursory glance to note the Shogunate system in place. However, unlike many places there seems to be strict enforcement of rules that indenture the upper classes to work to help the lower classes in anyway they may need. Near the tower in a large work site where what appears to be an ancient ziggurat tip sticking out of the ground. There are no workers but guards stand near by at all times.

"There's nothing inherently bad about being an archer." Shi-Oda explained vaguely, waving his gauntleted hand in a small semi circle. The broad Lunar walked with purpose and resolve, his grandly-ornamented plate armor clinking softly with each step - along with the soft ring of his wrapped grand daiklave strapped to his back. What the hell is a Wyld Hunt, anyway? "It takes focus. A keen eye, sure. Steady hand. But all of those things could be better applied to mastering the blade or fist." He argued pleasantly, against pretty much nobody.
His mate absolutely wasn't going to, anyway.
"I mean, when was the last time a child declared loudly to his friends that he wanted to become a great bowman?" Shi-Oda asked with a small chuckle. "It's a fine pursuit, and I'm sure that there are many legends about skilled, brave rangers out there, but they're hard to see for the... numberless legends regarding swordsmasters and their mythic blades." He explained, raising his eyebrows. "You never hear about a fletcher so masterful that he's driven to seek solitude to hone his art and be sought out by heroes and the like. Blacksmiths? Sure. Tons."
"But in terms of pure practicality, one basically can never run out of sword. Arrows are finite. I can hit people with my blade until my arms fall off, but if my quiver only holds a couple dozen arrows, then I can only end a couple dozen threats before falling back on - you guessed it - a blade."
Shi-Oda laughed at his own (somewhat poor) wit, finding that his footsteps had carried him to the ruin-built city of Dura, a city-state something or other that had made public their need for heroes. A call to arms that he - and his wife - weren't about to let pass without answering. For one, they were roughly in the area, already doing heroics. For the second, they were heroes - answering calls for help was basically the kind of shit that Shiyo lived to do. "So. Kira. Do you think they dug up something bad, or they're digging up something good that somebody else wants?" He asked with a broad grin. Maybe his bravado was a little crass, but neither scenario - or one he hadn't wagered on - would stop Shi-Oda from putting his considerably robust life on the line to save the day.
That detail, much like the tactical details of the city, meant almost nothing to him. He was a hero - doing heroics was what he did.

Though she might have been born in the West, and her first love had been the North, Kira quickly found herself being drawn to the East like a moth to the flame. It wasn't a natural sensation. She loved the smell of seawater and the sound of gulls because she had been born to it. She loved the oceans of snow and the perfect silence of white plains because it spoke to her. Here, in the East, she felt pulled and attracted by some arcane force beyond her ability to discern. Flashes of orange water, lizards that walked upright like men. A court in the sun...
Get out of my head.
One thing was sure. The farther Kira went east, the stronger the oppressive memories of her past life became. A love of endless paths of green had quickly become buried beneath a longing for violent gladiator pits and crowns that thundered. It was at once stifling and comforting. She felt as if she was finally back in her real home, not the corrupt and horrifying place she'd been forced to endure for the first fifteen years of this-
Get out of my head!
Shi-Oda was speaking. Anything at all to take her mind off of her mind. She almost wished for more dreams from the Faceless Man now. Focus. Respond. "The former is more common in tales. I wish they faced no danger at all, but if they do, I hope it's a dark and sinister entity beyond mortal means, rather than just men consumed by greed." So formal. So forlorn. That cheery girl from Coral needed to find her way back fast, because Kirasath Dravere was in danger of becoming an adult. And Lies had thought it was a good thing! She might never understand that woman.
"We should approach casually. Carrying weapons and armor might well make them uncomfortable." To say nothing of the worries of Anathema. Kira quietly made a note not to let her anima flare too much around...people. It was so uncommon for her to actually fight near living, innocent humans that keeping a low profile here would be an exercise in self-control.

Hui was, if anything, strangely quiet. What little information she had gathered hadn't been much. Some sage had been studying old artifacts--powerful ones, by any guess. And now, he was claiming some sort of bad omen was coming. At least, that's what her other spiders had told her.
However, Hui, the Patient, quiet woman she was, had moved into the town relatively demurely. She want to scope out and observe the issues before she made a move. Only then could she prepare her plan. She remembered something suddenly. A nagging answer. And then, it passed. Annoying. Still, if this man who was looking for answer needed someone to save him from impending doom, who was she to judge? Anything to help a wealthy, powerful mystic with a knack for ancient lore.
And even more importantly, anything to watch a few other Exalted in action. Calling for heroes this far in the west would attract others. Perhaps she could learn from them. Or, perhaps she could mess with their heads a little. That too would provide some entertainment to absolute dullness of the situation. But, she had to be cautious. After all, attracting the intention of hunters would be problematic in an urban environment, and although her name was little known, there was no harm in playing safe at some level.
She walked over to one of the merchant booths, idly handing the man some scrip in exchange for a drink, waiting to listen and see what gossip could occur.

The town held a tension in the air as Shi-Oda and Kira walked along. The sounds of a normal city would seem muted here. Shop keepers cried their wares but half-heartedly and the usual sight of children playing one game or another was completely absent.
A young boy about ten years of age stumbled to a doorway only to be quickly pulled back inside by his mother's hand. (successful Perception+awareness check against difficulty 1 will show that the boy was gaunt and covered with star-shaped red welts.) People whispered in alleys and in corners about a curse (same check to notice) as the pair walk they will be looked on suspiciously by many and if they approach the dig site and the marble tower near it guards will finally stop them cordially and ask their business.
-Lies in Wait will be able to notice the same marks on the shop keeper's arm as he hands her a drink (perception + awareness difficulty 1). If she notices she will also notice he is trying to hide it.

The last time Kira and Shiyo had seen something this depressing had been Varsi, and that was under the control of a demonic host. Naturally, Kira was on her guard for absolutely anything that might be wrong. Sea-blue eyes sharper than an blade easily spotted the poxed boy, and she narrowed her gaze in an attempt to make sense of what was going on around her. The city was in trouble, of course, but perhaps they were too late. If so, and this was a Varsi scenario, these people might already be beyond help. Unfortunately, she was too caught up in her thoughts to hear anything about a curse, and her thoughts turned her to the task at hand. Whether or not Shi-Oda followed her, she walked with purpose up to the house she had just seen the afflicted lad peek out of. Knocking quietly a few times, she affixed her most understanding smile in preparation for whoever came to the door. It didn't matter if they were expected or not at this point. Kira had seen someone in distress and was compelled to help.

Hui enjoyed a small sip, eyeing the man's odd marks and noticing his shyness. She smiled slightly and attempted to address the man. "So tell me, how have you been as of late?" After all, charm and delicacy could get you further than a threat in most situations. Maybe she'd learn something useful, or at least get a feel for the mood of the merchants. After all, they were often more honest then you thought--after you'd given them money already. And to be frank, intimidation wouldn't work here. Whatever made those welts was likely scarier than her. Well, unless she turned into a bug and started eating people.
She chuckled playfully. "It seems such a quiet town, but a little....sad...." she went on, talking to herself as much as the merchant. Then again, maybe she was just being loud to see what attention she could gather. She waited for a moment, eyeing some of the guards nearby. Why was everyone so quiet? Why was no one on the streets, not even a decent dip or street gambler? Something was up.
The truth was that any good criminal knew that nearly abandoned quiet streets meant little in the way of good things. So little was happening, she would probably notice a fly buzzing in the relative silence. Or not. Depended on how strong this drink was....

Like Kira, Shi-Oda had an eye for trouble despite his convivial attitude. His eyes weren't as sharp as hers, but let none doubt that the Righteous Wind of Halta did not care for, and pay attention to, the health of children. He set his jaw and followed Kira to the door, knowing that her inherent sense of right had already set her on a direct path to the heart of the matter. It was something he admired, something he anticipated, and as a Lunar, it was his duty to watch the flanks of his Solar as she tackled the issues of the world head on. So when the townsfolk muttered about a curse, although Kira did not hear it, Shi-Oda absolutely did. "A curse...?" He mused quietly aloud as Kirasath strode forward, before straightening his back and squaring his shoulders. "If he's here, he's mine." Shiyo promised Kira without his typical cheer. Shi-Oda owed Albrecht a few hours of payback for Varsi, and he had a reckoning that even that blonde prick's metal skin would crack if he hit it continually and hard enough. While Kira knocked on the door of the home they'd seen the boy disappear into, Shi-Oda took a typical position beside his mate - choosing to let her handle the niceties, while he kept an eye out. Although he hadn't been through Dura (that he remembered,) the massive young man in huge, shining plate armor and his gigantic silver sword were surprisingly well-known in some places in the East. He'd been wandering for years, doing good and being noisy about it - with and without Kirasath, in fact. Let villains beware, and the innocent breathe a sigh of relief, Shi-Oda was on the job. The mayor or leader of Dura could wait. If Dura had been corrupted anything like Varsi had been, that matter took immediate and absolute precedence. ((Consider me on-guard))

As Kira and Shi-Oda stood at the door they heard shuffling within for a few moments and the soft whimper of what was likely more than one child before the noticeable sound of weight against the door would catch their attention.
"Hello?" a woman's voice. She sounded tired and weak but with undertones that obviously showed she was trying to be pleasant. A small square wooden slat moved to the side to show the eyes and forehead of a woman who was apparently sick. Her pale skin had a sheen of sweat and her eyes were bloodshot although likely quite pretty when in good health. Her black hair was in a bun in the fashion of the shogunate. "Please, friends move on. My family is I'll and we don't want to spread this curse to you."
The boy lay upon a rice mat with a cloth on his head just beyond her. (successful investigation + perception difficulty 1 will reveal that the local shogun has ordered a quarantine for anyone showing signs of the sickness due to visions he has had of darkness from the east coming to the city. He's remarkably open with his people.)
The man leans down in front of Lies in Wait in a short bow. His thinking grey and black hair showing the same marks on his scalp.
"The people suffer from a sickness spreading through town, madam." he says calmly as he straightenes, "For your safety you should likely keep moving on lest you catch it as well."
He turns and begins arranging his wares and cleaning glasses in a pot of steaming water.
The sounds of guards in there samurai styled armor moving at a jog in a six man formation run up the street passed both groups and change shifts with other guards along the way. They don't seem to be sick...yet.

Hui was not a master of tact or kindness. She was, however, a healer upon occasion, mostly upon the occasion that leading a gang meant splinting limbs and patching boo-boos She took a quick look at the man's arm, hoping she could get better details. She sighed at the man. "I'm a bit of a healer by trade. Perhaps I can take a look at your affliction. Better yet, I could discuss with the other healers in this city. Surely, if there is an epidemic, someone must be researching it, yes?" Offering hope was always a risky proposition, but to the sick and the dying, hope was the greatest power possible. It was a tool that convince a man to sell all he had, or fight for survival, even if the hope was snake oil. Maybe it was because the woman was kind, even if ill-mannered by refusing to explain herself or her motives. But hey, sometimes, it was the impetuous genius who got things done. Or....not.
