Travelling without a procession was difficult for Tepet Nischa to get used to. She had moved with well over a hundred men at her heels for months now, ever since her most recent promotion. Now, she was travelling with less than a full fang of troops, and even then only for ceremonial purposes. There were no monsters on the road, no pirates to fight, no civilians to protect. This was simply a show of accomplishment and authority. Likewise, normally she wouldn't be riding a horse, but for the symbol of status a well-bread horse afforded someone. "Show yourself off to V'neef," she had been told. "She likes you, and maybe she'll listen."
The matriarch of this junior "house," V'neef, was one of the most powerful bargaining chips in existence. She had decided that all of her children were precious resources not to be squandered. To be totally fair, she was both right and completely overconfident. Her children might have been of outstanding blood, but what had any of them done? One admiral. That girl who was trying to open the Imperial Manse, like so many others before her. And some wine-makers. Blood was not the only chip to be anted with bargaining, and it had little to do with this trade agreement.
Silly V'neefs.
Ordering most of her men to stand watch outside, Nischa had probably a dozen finely-armed and armored, extremely well-trained young soldiers standing on the front step of House V'neef's "ancestral" manse. Two followed her in, a third took her horse. Muzao and Lir, her lieutenants in the field, stayed right beside her as she stared down one of the V'neef servants. The Dragon-Blood's skin began to glow very faintly red with her own Essence, as this was the time for impressions. "The representative from House Tepet is here. Inform your masters."

V'Neef - the woman, not the house - tended to take direct action when it came to get children. Partly because her House was young and new, and partly because her brood was a small one. Even with every child (thus far) Exalting, their numbers were still small enough that micromanagement was feasible where Cathak Cainan would likely struggle to name over half of his grandchildren. So, in a way, today she'd done both and neither - it was not V'neef herself that greeted the fiery Tepet at the door, flanked by guards/servants, but one of her grandsons well suited to the task.
'Charm the Tepet.' He'd been instructed. 'We still want to be allies, but our position is delicate right now - we can afford no lost love.' The Tepet would expect to speak with the woman in charge - and naturally, she would - but until then, it was his duty to delight their honored guests.
Kerbim gracefully slid forward, greeting Tepet Nischa with a warm, respectful smile and bowed deeply. "It is an honour to receive you, Tepet Nischa - The tales of your beauty and powerful presence fail to do the reality justice." He complimented easily, earnestly, keeping his hands visible and his posture relaxed as a show of respect. "I'm afraid my grandmother asks that you forgive her for being delayed - might I offer you and your men refreshment and rest for the hour until she is able to speak with you?" Kerbim offered, gesturing into the manse with an outstretched arm.

Nischa had long since found a place to sit in a warmly-furnished room. An expensive rug, comfortable couches, an antique table in fantastic condition, bookshelves filled with casual reading...plants everywhere. It was probably a guest room. Unfortunately, Muzao and Lir didn't quite fit in as well as the noble-born Nischa did when presented with a classy room full of classy things to do. Neither did they snap to attention when one of their hosts entered, though both eyed him in an attempt to make sure he had no hostile intent towards their commander. Not that she needed the help; her senses were sharper and her reflexes faster than either of them.
On the other hand, Nischa was quite mannered, and stood as the man of the house entered the room offering her own curt bow. "You are as gracious as any host I've ever encountered, but I'm afraid you have me at the disadvantage of your name." Magic helped in many things. Currently, it was helping her say exactly what the other party wanted to hear. Return kindness with kindness. "I require nothing, but if there's to be a longer wait, I'd ask that you share your hospitality with my men outside." With a quick nod of her head, she indicated to the mortals currently closely examining a decently-crafted vase as if it were a masterpiece.
The two men fell into ran behind her, relaxed attention as they sized up the Dragon-Blood before them. They were brave, and had long since seen the difference between a pretty noble and a functional one. Nischa barely paid their suspicion any mind. "If having armed forces in her meeting room makes the lady V'neef uncomfortable, then I could have my lieutenants move outside, as well."

"I am V'neef Kerbim, honored guest - though in the interest brevity and friendship, you may call me whatever pleases you most." Kerbim replied with a coy smile - Perhaps it was a little bold of him, but this was the fun part where decisions and the like were made. Impressions. He swept into a seat near, but not beside or across from, his guest. The insinuation? That this was a meeting between friends, that they were on the same side, without forcing the subject.
Blood had been spilled over seating arrangements. They were important. Besides, the Sun was shining in that spot, and he liked better in the Sun. Showed off the green and red.
"You need not worry about your lieutenants, either - I trust you, after all, and so does my grandmother." Kerbim promised with an earnest smile, meeting the eyes of one of Nischa's entourage for a moment. The big, handsome one. He flashed a flirty smile, as sure as a wink among the court. Never hurt to have people like you, after all. "Perhaps I am mistaken, but does it not say that a commander's troops are as her arms and legs? I could not ask you to part from either. Rest assured that my cooks are already at work - hospitality is the sincerest form of admiration, your men will leave with full bellies today." Charm charm charm. Look at how generous and gorgeous I am, wouldn't grandmother be proud?
His prestige in his house - and by extension, his career - relied upon Kerbim's charm, his looks, and his breeding. If V'neef wanted to solidify her mildly truncated alliance with house Tepet with a marriage, and if she called upon him to charm the talented young general, then he would. Happily. There were worse wives to have than Tepet Nischa, after all - adequate breeding, sterling education, promising career, dutiful reputation. Kerbim fancied himself the ideal husband of such a woman: connected, wealthy, and low-maintenance, with a peerless pedigree. A pretty thing to charm her contemporaries with and leave at home while at war. Granted, most of Kerbim's understanding of such things was based upon literary instruction and observation, but still.
Notice me, Tepet. I am displaying my feathers for you.

When had she stepped into a Cynis meeting?
Nischa was sorely tempted to respond to idle flirting with detached bravado, but first impressions were extremely important. Roughing up her grandson would do little to win V'neef's favor back. Instead, she followed her (magic-powered) instincts and once again responded with what he wanted to hear, rather than what she wanted to say. "A commander who cannot act alone is mortal, milord. We are Exalted. I trust these men with my life, but they aren't necessary for my function in this meeting." Hell, the entire fang sitting outside was basically just for show.
Giving a quick nod to Muzao, Nischa looked at the door, and the lieutenants behind her shrugged and moved towards the door. A disciplined troop would have bowed and marched out, but a disciplined troop wouldn't also be in the front yard catcalling at the local servants and smoking. Red Piss Legionnaires were rough-edged, but no combat-ready unit ever survives inspection. The only men on the Blessed Isle who could rival the ones she had hanging out on the front lawn were Silent Legionnaires...and they hardly qualified as "men."
With a stretch, Tepet Nischa rested her arms across the back of the couch. No mortals, no other ears. She could relax. "To be honest, I'm not quite sure what I'm doing here. I'm not much of a negotiator, and from the rumors I've been hearing, I'm exactly the reason that negotiations between our Houses have been suspended."

Honestly.
If Nischa were biting her tongue any harder, there'd be blood on the floor. Soldiers.
"I wouldn't place the blame for that sad consequence anywhere close to squarely on your shoulders, honored guest." Kerbim promised with what was supposed to be a reassuring smile. Was Nischa to blame? Maybe a little. V'Neef didn't want her children being wed off to Legionnaires or Soldiers, and Nischa was absolutely one or both of those things. She wasn't the cause of conflict, nor was she anywhere near the biggest or baddest name swept up in it, but that didn't stop her from being a part of the process regardless. In a way, everyone was. Even so.
If he had a fan, he'd be fanning himself out of habit. Instead, Kerbim allowed himself the appearance of relaxing, resting ankle on knee and adjusting his sleeves so he could more comfortably put his hands on the arms of his seat. "If there is a reason you've been dispatched for this task, I'm sure it must be a good one - a pragmatic woman such as yourself is far too valuable an asset to be wasting the time of." He pointed out with a coy smile, raising a hand from his knee to use to prop his head up. Casual poster, head tilted. Perfect.
"That said, I am thankful for the opportunity to meet you, and even more so for the honor of a conversation." Kerbim complimented with a cheerful smile. "Your career is most fascinating, to say the least - and I've a friend in your graduating class who colors your academic and military abilities as the very stuff legends are made from." He added. Hey, look - I've got connections and friends. Witness me, Sempai. "In truth, I admire your ability to command respect in all environments. It is a quality I sometimes wish I could emulate, although I fear I'd be but a pale imitation compared to the real thing."

"School is long past for some of us," Nischa deflected either modestly or dismissively. It was a bit difficult to tell, with her Charm active. "Half a decade or more, and becoming more distant with each passing year. I would rather hear that people know of my crusades in the Southwest sea, or of my unhesitating leap to the assistance of my kin when they needed me. Personal accomplishment is good for nothing but stories if it does not further a higher cause." And Nischa had no use for stories, save to intimidate others.
Hm. More compliments. He was attempting to soften her up, or warm her to his argument. It was working, too. Kerbim seemed to be a charming and empathetic man. But two could play that game. "Maybe, if this meeting goes well for both of us, we might be able to spend a bit more time learning from each other. I'm sure there's quite a bit such a gifted wordsmith could impart upon a common soldier." Her grin was carefully two parts warm, one part mischievous, one part facetious. Things like this would be difficult for mortals to pull of, but as a Fire Aspect she was inherently connected to the warmth of others' hearts, and knew how to draw that out.
And for V'neef Kerbim, her instincts told her that the best approach would be equal measures tongue-in-cheek and polite.
"Milady V'neef is said to have a tenuous relationship with her elder sister, yet when I arrived, my men didn't face even the slightest bit of opposition marching in and making themselves at home." Bait. Reel. "I admire your bravery, but I'm concerned with your safety. One can only defend oneself with favors and insinuations for so long, and I fear that the V'neef legions might not be enough to protect you if one of the more ambitious Houses decides to make a move." Ignoring the fact that a Tepet was one of the only legitimate candidates to the throne.

Oh yes, Lady Tepet. I'm so very vulnerable, won't you be my guardian knight in shining jade armor? Kermin allowed a slightly flustered blush, glancing away as though to hide what was clearly visible. "My lady, if House Tepet meant me harm, there is little I could do to dissuade her." He pointed out cheerfully. "And if she were to send such an uncommon soldier such as yourself to do the job, there are even fewer options left to me. And I doubt even my honeyed words would do much to promise my safety, at that point - which rather makes your own knowledge the more valuable of our two sets, I should think."
"But I believe we're both realists, milady - if one of the Great Houses decided that it would no longer tolerate House V'neef, there is little my grandmother can do besides rely on the help of others and try to control the damage to whatever extent she could." Kerbim admitted, standing from his chair. Was he proud to be a member of House V'neef? Absolutely. But pride, to a certain point, simply became foolhardy bravado. House V'neef was barely large enough to qualify for the name, and what military power it had would be hard-pressed to mobilize against an ambush - a navy was only good at defending the shores, and Kerbim did not own beach property. One didn't have to be a House of Bells Valedictorian to understand that much.
